My lucent WinModem is a software based dialup modem. The modem is regulated by software instead of hardware. Is it possible to have a DSL modem that does this? Does it have to work through an ethernet port? Could a dialup modem like mine operate like a DSL modem if it was programed/ had the right software or driver

So, my dialup winmodem can't be made into a DSL winmodem, but there are DSL winmodems, and DSL softModems.

Compaq used to make an interal dsl modem but they are extremly rare, you pretty much are better off with an external modem.

I would imagine they use alot more CPU than a dialup winmodem

The cpu that the external dsl modem would use is minum as it would do all computing in the external dsl modem, basicly the same impact as using your network would in any other place. I really don't know what your point is, its a non issue anyway, if you cpu is that slow that you need the extra 10 hz you should upgrade your pc.

DSL Modems arent truly modems. Modem stands for modulator/demodulator. It converts digital and analog signals between the POTS and the computer. With DSL, there is no need, its digital all the way through.

DSL is Not issue of Modem.

Having DSL Modem dose not provide you with DSL.

You need a DSL service riding on your Telphone line.

Modem stands for Modulator Demodulator, it is a generic name of type of device.

Dialup and DSL are very different technologies and there is No similarity between how the Modulation Demodulation is done.

Dialup actually is using the phone Line. DSL is just using the Wire, you do not need phone line to run it; you need a wire connection to the DSL source at the Telco.

Well, you need the phone line, just not the phone service :)

No. You need a phone line. You may not need phone service, however. It depends on the provider.
