Software causing CDRW to fail?

Back when I bought the components fotr my system (october 2002) i bougt a TDK 4800B (48x 16x/24x 48x) as my sole CD capable device.

I experienced problems with it, but not often enough to send it back at the time. (messing up on an occasional CD burn, sometimes freezing fully and not finishing.)

I just recently sent my plea to TDK's tech support (in Much greater detail), and their entire response seemed convinced that it was a SOFTWARE problem, not hardware...

Has anyone heard of two burning software conflicting with eachother, or preventing the drive from correctly working? (ex. Roxio and Nero)

I have the latest firmware, which if anything, made it worse, and i've tried numerous burning software without any luck... i've even tried disableing XP's native burning feature to make sure that wasnt conflicting.

its now to the point that I cant even burn a CD. the drive spins up to speed, and then stops... beeps, and spins back up. if i dont take action, it seems to "surge" my system forcing a restart (auto restart on system error is disabled) and the blank media is empty, though the progress may have shown tracks being written.

Yes I have and quite recently too!!! Roxio and Nero together I've been told are not compatible. My problem was Roxio and Nti.

I would get rid of Roxio. Use Nero only. It helps if you have a CD burner with buffer underrun protection. When writing the cd, if the buffer runs dry, the write will fail. If you don't have the buffer underrun protection, you need a fast CPU and lots of memory. I used to make lots of coasters when I was using a 233 MHz comp without buffer underrun protection.

Bryans45 should contact ColonelAngus on an unrelated topic.
Sorry for posting here but it's the only way to send him a message. He's not answering his PM.

if anyone uses evidence eliminator it appears to prevent nero 5.5 copying music but not data. this has me beat! can't seem to copy the music any more, any ideas what has gone missing. using btc 52 24 52 cdrw with b/underrun

yeah, i keep my comp very clean, and only had roxio and nero on it... and the problem kept getting worse.

i think i just had a bad CDRW drive... in any case... my new one should be arriving today actually... so lets hope it works:D

It could be software, but here is a weird one for you:

My Sony 48x CDRW would not burn ISOs of any format (even test ISOs created with Nero from my backup data CDs). It would start, then hang. The light on the drive would blink forever, and the drive would spin up like it was preparing for liftoff.

I would have to reboot my computer to get the CD out. I was using Nero, Easy CD Creator, installed one at a time. No go.

I tried lower speeds. This worked, once. I tried different DMA settings.

It wouldn't even work making a data CD reliably (worked ok even though ISOs failed, then that failed too).

Tried the XP CD writing software (data only of course). Worked like a charm.

Reinstalled Nero. Nada. It should be noted that in XP, Nero uses the imapi.sys driver to burn from what i can see (same for XP CD writing software).

Looked for firmware updates. Nada. Diagnostic startup, nada.
System restore to when it worked. Nada.

I was almost completely certain this had to be a software problem.

Put in a TDK 52x burner.

Been smooth sailing ever since. Didn't even reinstall my burner apps. Never had abad burn at al, and have put 100 CDs through ti at least.

Moral of this story? Assume its software, but keep in the back of your mind it could be hardware as well.

yup, thats sounds almost exactly similar to my problem.

mine would burn data cd's and ISO's just fine... and an OCCASIONAL music cd would slip through ok...

then i upgraded firmware and performanced started decreasing to the point that nothing would burn (over about a month).

i tried different software, disabled XP's native burning features, changed DMA settings... thw works.... and nothing.

burner still hasnt come... today better be the day

I've had a similar problem with Nero whereby it hangs, and I have to reboot the PC to eject the CD. Also found that Real One player hangs Nero too. Run Clone CD too, and that and Nero seem to coexist quite harmoniously.

As an aside, how do you disable the XP burn feature - seeing as I never use it.
