    Dear Major Geek Support Forum,

    Software - DELL - 2009.10.11

The DELL Computer has Windows 2000 Operating System. Is it better to Install Windows XP Operating system in addition to Windows 2000 or uninstall Windows 2000 and install Windows XP?

    Thanking you.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Manilka

Do you know if you will need to run any software that is windows 2000 compatible only? I don't think I know of any that won't run on xp.
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sysreqs/pro.mspx
as long as the computer meets these minimum requirements, and you can get all the drivers required to run xp, then i would use xp.

note, that those are the minimum requirements to run windows xp. I wouldn't even use a computer that had those hardware specs, so i would hope that what you want to put xp on has more RAM (probably 1gb will be ok) . Check Dell's website to make sure they provide drivers for the system before upgrading. If you choose to go with xp, then there's no reason to keep 2000 installed anymore. Just make sure any of the software you currently have, is compatible with xp.

    Dear Major Geek thesmokingun,

    Software - DELL - 2009.10.11

The DELL Computer has 62 megabytes (MB) of RAM. As 64 MB minimum is supported, even that may limit performance and some features, I have abandoned the idea of upgrading it as it may take ages for our office to supply us with a 1 GB RAM.

For example, the 1 GB RAM which I requested for “NTRL-Sri Lanka” Computer has still not been received. It was said 1 GB RAM cards are not compatible with its motherboard. I do not know whether this is true as I changed my computer (“User_jaye”)’s 256 MB RAM with 1 GB RAM. Therefore I requested them to at least replace it with a 512 MB RAM.

“I don’t like it but I guess things happen that way”.

    Thanking you.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Manilka

    manilka835:

try this (was suggested to me elsewhere in the forums, i believe):
    Code:
    http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/
it will scan your system and tell you exactly what sort of memory sticks your system will accomodate. with that information, you can use it to search out other sites that may have exactly what you need at a lower price.

the scanner is very safe and let me know exactly what my 6 year old Dell Dimension 4700 Windows XP Home system needed and the maximum i could upgrade to (from 512mb to 4gb, in my case).

try this link if you want to keep 2000 & add XP:
    Code:
    http://www.win.net/optimator/WinWiz/Tips/DualBoot.htm
there are other sites which you can check by using Google and typing in: 2000 xp dual boot as your search criteria. i do recommend reading information on other sites to see if there's something else not addressed at the site i gave you.

here's another link i found using the search criteria: microsoft "upgrading from 2000 to xp" in a Google search:
    Code:
    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.win2000.setup_upgrade&tid=cc4dfc1d-1fbe-42bf-bb89-57696cb0c1a0&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1
hope this information is of help to you.

there may be a bios update that can address a computer's RAM limit, in your NTRL-Sri Lanka computer, but that's not always possible.

When I first had windows xp, the computer was an amd athlon with 256mb of ram, and it seemed to run fine at the time. but it seems that with each subsequent service pack, the RAM requirements (not necessarily microsoft's requirements, but my own) went up. I went to 512mb. Now with service pack 3, I'm not sure I would go with anything less than 1gb. And I also wouldn't recommend using xp with anything less than service pack 3.

Dear Major Geek, Senior Member cake,

The DELL Computer unfortunately has no Internet Connection. I tried connecting a “Dongle”, a high speed wireless Internet connection, but it could not be installed.

Thanks for your suggestions. Perhaps I can use them for other computers for upgrading as these have Internet connection.

    Thanking you.

    Yours Sincerely,

are you possibly missing a needed driver?

check by right clicking on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager. do you see any yellow "?/!" ? if so, you probably have an issue with a driver. if you don't see anything, expand (click on the "+") each category to look. you definitely need to fix anything with a yellow "?/!"

if you can use another pc to get to Dell's website, type in the Dell Service Tag (it should be on the side of your tower/case) of the pc in question (you can also type in the specific model/OS of your pc), and look at which driver(s) originally came with the computer. if you used to connect via download, and now connect via broadband, you'll need drivers that are in the Networking section. the Dial-up drivers under the Connection section won't help.

download it onto removable media such as re-writable cd, flashdrive or usb external drive. install the needed driver(s) from the removable media onto your affected pc. if it's small enough, you can even use a floppy/zip disc if both computers have a floppy/zip drive.

this is what i did for my 6 year old Dell Dimension 4700 XP Home desktop at my last reformat. if you're missing any other drivers, you can right click on the "yellow" ones, noted above, click on Properties, click on Update Drivers and get them via web once you have a connection.

    Dear Corporal cake,

    Software - DELL - 2009.10.11

    Features of “DELL Computer”

    • X86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6
    • 63,724 KB RAM
    • 62MB RAM, Intel Corporation 810 Graphics Controller Hub
    • Available hard disk space
Total Size and Free Space available respectively
      Local Disk (C :) 9.56 & 7.57
      Local Disk (D :) 14.30 & 13.90
      Local Disk (E :) 14.30 & 14.30
    • CD-ROM
    • Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse

    Missing a needed driver?
By right clicking on My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager, under Other Devices, PCI Simple Communications Controller, a yellow "? /!" is seen.

    PCI Simple Communications Controller
    Device Status
The Drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)

Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device.

I browsed the Dell Website along with the DELL service tag FL9821S and the operating system as Windows 2000. The available internet connection to the Laboratory is via Broadband. Therefore I looked up in the Network section. I downloaded all the 11 Files but they could not be installed as a dialog box appeared saying “Click the program you want to use to open ‘DriverDownloadedManager.applicat….’ and inquiring the “Description for files of this type:” and “Choose the program you want to use:”

Unfortunately with my limited knowledge I could not understand what action to take further. Please advice.

    “NTRL-Sri Lanka” Computer
I am happy to announce that the “NTRL-Sri Lanka” Computer is back in action following the replacement of the motherboard.

    Thanking you.

    Yours Faithfully,
    Manilka
