Software for linking avis and mpgs

I wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I stuck it here. Please move it if appropriate.

I need to put together a looping video for a presentation that is a compilation of several videos that are in several formats. One is a quick time video and the remainder are either windows media files or .mpg files. I think it will be easiest to convert everything to something that window's media will play and then embed it in a power point slide to loop continuously.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software (preferable freeware or shareware) that will allow converting these files to the same format and then stringing them together so I can make one movie file and loop it in ppt? (Or a completely different solution if I am going about this the wrong way).
