software meter for Internet usage

We have give computers, three desktops and two laptops. All of a sudden (last ten days) our connection(s) to the Internet has jumped drastically. We are on a metered satellite system and so it is important to keep track of our usage to avoid going over our allotment. The computers are using XP Pro, XP Family, Win 7, and Win 8.1.

Is there any software we can load on the computers which will log the amount of Internet send/receive on that machine? We do not need the amount of time connected, only the quantity of data being transmitted to and from.

Thank you. I have downloaded version 4 to try on the win 8.1 computer. I am interested in the statistics option to track amounts of transfer but not the speed. And I do not need to control the bandwidth.

Nick, thank you so much for the suggestion.

I downloaded the netlimiter version 4 and put it on the win 8.1 machine. I showed that Live Mail (the replacement for Outlook Express) was downloading the several thousand messages I had stored at the ISP. This was even though I had downloaded them a month ago. That was chewing up download statistics.

I now have a tool to monitor this type of behavior.
