I took a look through other possible threads and didn't find anyone with my exact issue.

I recently (a few weeks ago) bought an XFX Radeon HD 5770. I installed it and it ran beautifully for a day.

Then, when playing Starcraft 2 the mouse icon became distorted. I close SC2 and it remains funky on windows as well. Shredded like an artifact. No other graphical errors.

I got better cooling as I thought it may have been a heat issue. It is definitely not heat.

I reinstalled drivers from AMD. Am currently reinstalling directx.

Could this be a hardware issue straight out of the box? What could cause this? Should I return the card ASAP, exchange it?

Have you tried going into your mouse pointer settings and changing them to a different pointer, then changing back to your original pointer? It could simply have been a SC2 glitch, though I haven't experienced that with SC2 myself.

Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound-->Mouse (under Devices and Printers)-->Pointers tab-->select different theme and click apply, then select original theme and click apply.

The next time it happens I'll give that a shot thanks

I tried changing the mouse pointer, no difference. I updated drivers and direct x and made sure everything is attached well to the card.

Ideas before I trade it in?

Have you noticed the symptom while using any other games or programs? And, what do you do to solve the problem: close SC2, restart Explorer, restart your machine?

Strangely ONLY with SC2. When I close SC2 the mouse pointer stays funky, even if I change it through windows. A restart of the computer makes it go away.

The following quotes are from the ATI Catalyst 10.9 release notes:

The first indicates that there have been problems with SC2, the second that hardware cursor problems have been addressed. Armed with that, I'd suggest downloading and installing the most current ATI or XFX drivers, if you haven't already. If that's not the answer, then you might consider contacting ATI and/or XFX support - something seems to be clashing between your card's drivers (at least while running SC2) and Windows' HID.

Speaking of hardware cursor: is there an option in SC2 for hardware vs. software cursor? If so, try changing, see if that alters your symptoms.
