Why does the price change when you go to the web site to download? An example is DSL 3.9 which is listed as $15 and the web site says $24.95.

Retailers can change their prices to what they like, providing they cover the buy-in costs and make profit on it.

The RRP (recommended retail price) is just a guideline for retailers to follow.

    Not true! Software/CDs/SD Cards......

These prices are set by the manufacturer before they hit the stores. The hot new games or CD that people line up at midnight to get, many stores make as little as 25 cents per sale.

Screwing with the RRP would have every Managers job on the line so it doesn't happen. They can mark an item down when needed, but not up.

Bait and Switch is called false advertising. Enforced by the fair consumer act. Not too many people bold enough to do this.

I think what may be happening to cpmr is of being re-directed by other web sites to the owners site. They don't actually sell the item so may have out dated information.

I disagree - compare anything from other websites and it'll be a different price.

For example, I was looking at a pair of Sennheiser headphones - they were £24.99 on dv247.com but only £14.99 on Amazon.

You'd think because Amazon is a large worldwide retailer - dv247.com is one of the largest sound technology retailers in the country and anyone would expect their prices to be competitive.

You are right, I was talking Software/CDs/Games. I should have been more specific.

Accessories are a totally different thing. Headphones/wires/adapters.... These are where the money is made. Thats why the salesman always wants to sell you extras.

It depends how much are bought in bulk. Amazon I would imagine buys or commits to massive amounts compared to most.
And I did say they can adjust the price down, they just can not go above set prices.

But still, in the UK prices vary for CDs, games, DVDs etc from online retailers, play.com probably being the cheapest in most cases.

If your talking about pricing on software then downloading is cheaper, they just give you the file. It costs more to get a cd/dvd because your paying for the disc, manuals, box, and shipping.
