Software problem

Hello, hope this isn't off topic but we have a strange problem with one website,
airbnb.com, a site with lots of graphics, Works fine on my PC, dual core athlon 2 GB memory, also OK on my Thinkpad 1GB. My wife's PC is similar spec to mine but when she opens the website she only gets the text and no graphics at all.
This is the only website where this occurs. Any suggestions how we can overcome this problem would be appreciated

First thoughts are (in order):

1. Try a different browser...

2. Assuming this is a Windows machine go to Control Panel > Internet Options - delete any temporary internet files, history, etc. Try re-acquiring the website, see if the symptoms change.

3. Download and install CCleaner (a free drive cleaning tool) - run the Cleaning routine with the browser(s) closed, then see if the symptoms have changed.

Try those first, let us know if we need to dig any further.

 

Hi Caliban and thanks for the suggestions. Our default browsers is Chrome. As you suggested, I tried IE with a degree of success in that the site started loading and a security alert pop up stopped the loading , problem with security certificate "expired or not valid" ticked OK.
"trusted or valid certificate" ticked OK but "Expired or not yet valid"Error warning. on clicking "ignore" the loading restarted momentarily and after doing thios procedure about 20 or so times, then site became useable, albeit, slow.
Chrome browser retained the graphic screen.

I ran CC Cleaner and also entered security center and unchecked security alerts with no change.

Try Pale Moon, which is basically an optimized Firefox (make note of the 32-bit or 64-bit downloads - I don't know which Windows you're running). I'm interested in seeing if there are any differences in symptoms.

For what it's worth, that airbnb.com page loads fairly slowly on my machine. I looked at the source code, and there's a fair amount of Javascript going on - but not an inordinate amount. There is, however, a rendering mode instruction in the page's header:

It's my understanding that that particular line can cause validation errors when used in an HTML document - the rendering instruction should instead be included in the root .htaccess file (in other words, the file should be server-side, not client-side). Not saying that that's your problem, but it is interesting.

 

Thank you both for your help but no luck. Decided that best thing to do was back up, format the HDD and re-install the OS ,Win XP. However Windows will not allow me to format the Drive and says I need to stop all activity before I can format however Task Manager still shows a couple of system files active and they will not allow process to be stopped. I have removed the drive and installed a spare from a spare PC.this now works OK but any suggestion how I can format the the old Disk - or is it toast?

 

Are you attempting to format the drive while Windows is running? If so, I can see where that would cause problems. You must boot to a Windows optical disk and format the drive from that live environment.
