I recently bought a camera with video recording capability. I want suggestions for software to edit video clips, particularly removing unwanted parts of a video.

I have Windows Live Movie Maker on my Windows 8 laptop and found youtube videos covering removing a part at the beginning or end but not in-between. I did find a video showing how to do that with Windows Movie Maker (distinct from Windows Live Movie Maker). So, I downloaded and installed Windows Movie Maker, only to discover it does not recognize .MOV files, the type of file created by the camera. My computer came with a basic version of CyberLink PowerDirector; it apparently will do some video editing but I haven't been able to figure out yet whether it will do what I want.

I found something in Yahoo! Answers. It's from 5 years ago but, apparently, still applies today.

I'm waiting for this to come http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/
As for now, I can cut parts of a video file. I just can't see a way to join the parts back together.
I'm hoping it will work like Audacity does for audio files.

Yes, Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate has apparently been updated; it supports Windows 8. I downloaded and installed it. The license agreement states it can be used for free for personal, non-commercial use. But, there's a catch; using it on a freeware basis results in the company name be inserted as a watermark in the center of the image. Same situation with another converter program I found: http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx?

So, I guess I'll have to make Video Converter Ultimate suffice for now. In the long run, if I'm going to be doing some recurring video captures with the camera, I may consider paying for a solution so that I can be free of the watermark. Would like to see the folks that make VLC Media Player complete development of product they have under development, the one plodr mentioned.
