Okay my girlfriends laptop dc jack fried because some stupid idiot at hp left a big solder ball that arced the jack. I just ordered a new one that is compatible with the DV6. (HP Pavillion DV6). My problem is that the new jack has 5 pins which are in somewhat different spots, then my original which has 6 wires attached to it. My soldering ability is good but my electrical knowledge is lacking.

My understanding is that there is positive & negative in dc, so what are the 6 original wires for? And I know I am going to have to solder to wires on one pin how do I know they are in the right spot.

My thought was that I order a replacement and I just solder how my original is soldered but this is not possible.

I have a multimeter how would i determine which ones are positive or negative.

I plugged the dc jack into the plugin and checked the points and I found only one negative and one positive, rated at about 19v. I no the red and black were positve and negative so I soldered them to the dc jack and put some shrink tubing around it.

Those two prongs parrellel to each other on the dc jack dont seem to be for anything. When I connect the the wire to the board another wire has power, and the others read negatives on the multimeter.

Heres my most recent question: Are all the connections either negative or positive? and if so could I connect all the positives to on and all the negatives to the other, or are they different.

    Hi Master,

Those extra pins, usually 4, are usually to hold the jack on the board. I beleive that the pad they solder to are grounded which is same as Negative. Usually the 4 mounting pins all are part of the "case" of the jack and are obviously part of the same piece of sheet metal. The pads they solder to are all one large pad. Hope this helps a little.

    Good Luck Jim

so are you saying that it should work with just the negative and the positive connected or that all the other pins should be should be soldered to the negative wire?

    Hi again Master,

If the jack you are having trouble with is mounted on the Mother Board then it is held in place by the four tabs and the pad they solder to is part of the MB and is already conected. If you are not replacing a jack that is on a MB then Yes only the positive and negative is necessary. If this doesn't answer your questions how about a little more detail.

    More luck, Jim

If you look at the picture the jack is suppose to be soldered to a wire that is clipped into the motherboard. There are 6 wires to be soldered to the dc jack. The previous dc jack had all the wires soldered, each to different pins, but the new dc jack which is apparently compatible doesn't have all those points.

I plugged the dc jack into the ac adapter and tested the points with a multimeter, and I found the negative and positive posts. Now I have six wires i need to figure out where to solder these. I assumed the red was positive because it was at the center of the old dc jack so I soldered that to the positive post on the dc jack. I also assumed the negative was the black one and soldered that one to the negative post. Now i have 4 wires left could I leave them unsoldered or do they need to be all connected to the negative post or what?
