How long will it be until solid state memory replaces hard drives? How much faester is solid state than a hdd?

Often wondered that myself. Wish I had an answer. My first PC had a 2GB harddrive (circa 1997). The guy at the PC shop said "You'll never use that much space!" True, at the time.

I recently bought a USB thumb drive that is 1GB in size . . . it just amazes me.
The thing is about the size of a pack of chewing gum - and wasn't very expensive, either. I've seen ads for jump drives that are 4GB in size.
