Some applications don't open in max view

I have a few applications such as Excel and my video viewer etc that for some reason always open in half screen or less view. I always maximize them to use, save them and close, but they reopen small again. I use Win 7 Pro.
Any help would really be appreciated. ;)

    How do you maximize them?

    usafveteran, Thanks for the reply.
I just click on the upper right hand corner next to the red "X" to maximize it . I've also tried dragging the corners to the edges of the screen and close them in that position.

A little known/publicised tip when certain windows insist on opening at less than maximised is to maximise them and press Ctrl Alt F10 together. It may or may not help but it won't do any hurt either ;)

Earthling, Thanks. It seems to have worked on one of them, hopefully it'll work on the others.

I haven't needed it much and can't now remember where I got it from, but it has always worked when I've needed it. Even googling it doesn't throw it up. :confused

An alternative I use is to maximise the screen, then holding down the SHIFT key, I click on the RED boxed X.
Next time I open it, it is usually maximised.
