    Hi! Me again!

Earlier this evening an automatic Windows update took place and I was told to switch off my machine for the updates to be installed, after which the machine would then automatically switch off. (Sounds a bit silly, but who am I to argue with Mocrosoft?)

When I rebooted, I could not get into any of "my favourites." Instead of a site address showing before the site itself comes up, all I kept getting were site IP's in the lower bar and nothing in the address line at the top, then eventually I would get the message "page not available..." - the usual jargon... and yes, my modem lights are all on, which tells me my internet connection is there, but I can't connect to the sites.

Rebooted, but the problem was still there and eventually I did a sys. restore back to Monday, after which everything was normal again.

Once in a while this problem does occur where I get IP's instead of entering a site and then I just do a restart, but this time no restart worked, which is why I did a sys. restore to a time that I know was ok.

Have I made any sense so far? I hope so, as I can't really explain this glitsch in clearer terms.

    Any help/advice, please?

    Thanks in anticipation.

For the moment, I'd turn off automatic updates. Something in the update and your computer did not get along. Sometimes it takes several days until the problems from patch Tuesday start to appear. If I read a specific patch is causing problems on computers, I'll report it here.

Thanks, plodr, but where do I find this feature to turn off the automatic updates?

Thanks, Steve - I didn't feel too happy about it either, and there were 9 - not 6 updates!!! However... I reinstalled them...

Hate to admit that I'm a complete idiot where computers are concerned, and it was only afterwards I noticed that my AV was acting up, so decided to uninstall it from Add or Remove programs and reinstall it. To my surprise it was not even listed there, which made me think that it possibly could have gone corrupt during the updates download/installation. So deleted every trace of my AV, reinastalled it and - hey! Everything is back on track!! And no, I don't pat myself on the back for being clever - it was just sheer luck that I managed to rectify the problem.

So, good people, my grateful thanks for all your tips and advice!

    Much appreciated!

But believe me, I WILL be back as and when necessary!
