step 1: setup a firewall or something and block ALL p2p traffic, sounds like p2p to me. That's all I can come up with now.

edit: anyone here know which ports are p2p?

ahhh, but kodo, most don't route through port 80.

they will if their original port is blocked.. they do have options for that. I know Kazaa does..

Well I posted that as a temporary fix. Also, I think that if they knew enough to route it through port 80, I don't think they would be using kazaa because of the danger of sueing.

gotta be honest with you. The ultimate solution is not to just block the ports and limit the bandwidth but to find out whot he culprits are and lock down their machines so they only do what they need to do.

    Hi,

I agree with Kodo; you have to find out who is abusing the bandwidth and put a stop to it.

More information about how the apartment complex connects to the Internet would be useful. If you're using a high-end router (and you probably are if the Internet connection is serving an entire apartment complex), it probably can count and log packets in any number of ways, including by IP address and MAC address. Whoever set the Internet connection up for the complex should be able to help, and if they can't, the upstream ISP can, depending on how the network in the complex is set up. If it is one big LAN using NAT behind a firewall, then you need to monitor the traffic from inside the NAT. On the other hand, if it uses real IP addresses, then the upstream ISP can easily monitor and log the traffic from your connection as it comes into their routers.

In any event, you want to get a log of traffic by IP or MAC address within the apartment complex' network, and then use that to track down the connection(s) that are sucking up the bandwidth.

Once you've found the person(s) responsible, you could proceed in one of two ways. The first way is the nice way: Approach the person(s), show them the logs, explain to them that they are affecting everyone else's Internet access and ask them to stop. The second would be to simply cap their bandwidth to prevent them from hogging it (and then wait for the screams to start :D).

Another issue is non-technical, but important: What are the terms under which Internet access is offered to the residents of the complex? If there are none at all, you might not legally be able to do much of anything. If terms of service and/or an acceptable use policy have been defined, you need to find out what they are, and then determine whether or not the person(s) are infringing before doing anything drastic.

    Regards,

    Hi,

A Terms of Service (TOS) and an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) are often the same thing, and creating one is best left to a lawyer that understands the issues involved and can apply them to your situation.

Whoever owns the apartment complex most likely already has a lawyer and that would be the place to start if the Internet access is offered to the tenants as a service by the owner. Generally, any TOS/AUP created should be a contract that the tenants sign should they elect to use the service.

To get ideas, do a Google search for "Acceptable Use Policy" and "Terms of Service". All ISPs have one, as do schools, colleges , universities and most businesses these days.

Although those that you find will be tailored to specific requirements, they should give you a general idea of how they are phrased and what they include.

Educational institutions tend to call them AUPs, I've found. I'm not sure what, if any, the legal differences are between the two, as I am not a lawyer. My experience with them is from a geek perspective. When I connect a customer's business LAN to the Internet, my standard speech is: "You need to have an Acceptable Use Policy, but I cannot create one for you. Please consult your lawyer and discuss it with them".

    Regards,

    dj
