Some sites won't come in...

Running IE8 on Vista, and everything's working fine, except some sites stubbornly refuse to come in.

    theweathernetwork.com and wikianswers.com are two.

The computer just sits there for 10 minutes, blank page, swirly thing swirling, green bar making its way microscopically from start to about 40% across until finally it gives up the ghost and admits it can't show the page.

Both sites were okay a few months ago.

    Any suggestions?

Might try an ipconfig /flushdns from the command line.
Maybe a bad entry in the cache.

Write down the current DNS then change the values to Open DNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
if the sites come in, call your ISP and complain about the DNS redirect at their end.
If the sites don't come in, start mentioning firewall and security programs in use. For that, look through task manager and identify the security running and post the processes (security only - not other programs that are running).
