First off, thank you guys for always helping me when I need it!
This is one of my less serious, but no less annoying problems.
I recently purchased a copy of "Battle for Middle Earth 2" for my best friend so we could play it together. His installed just fine on windows 8.
Mine on the other hand, would not install. I have had it run flawlessly on this same machine about a year ago, but i had to uninstall it to save space.
now, when i go to install the game (a 6 DVD large game), disk 1 installs just fine, while disk 2 just sorta makes a clicking noise in my drive every 30 seconds or so, and freezes up the computer for a good 5-6 seconds after every click.
My first thought was, "Oh, darn, my disk is scratched"
So i tried his disk, and it did the same thing. He tried mine, and it worked, making me think it was my laptop, and not the disks.
So disk 1 works, but disks 2-6 cannot be read by my laptop for some reason, even though they always could before.
I got the game to install on my desktop just fine a few hours ago.
I wonder what is wrong with my laptop. :p

Thanks in advance for all help!

Really odd thing i just noticed that i would like to add. The game is an official release, that i bought years ago and never had a problem with, but on my desktop, when i put the disk in,
Avast! pops up and says ChkDsk.exe is a threat.

Just speculation, but it sounds like maybe avast is blocking the installation of your game if you have avast on the laptop too.

Maybe there is a file in the game program named ChkDsk.exe that is required for the installation, and avast is stopping the installation of the file because of the Windows chkdsk.exe feature that can be run to find and repair hard disk errors and other problems.

Could be there is a threat out there that replaces the Windows chkdsk.exe. If it is avast causing the install problem, sounds like maybe they are covering this potential threat.

The only thing I can think of is to try turning off avast or whatever anti-virus you have and then try the game installation.

    Hett1138...

Just for the record, what version of Windows is on the laptop?

    OK...

I don't know about turning off the firewall and/or the UAC feature in Windows. If I did this I would disconnect from the internet first. Personally, I would probably try this in this spot (disconnect and turn off both), but I suspect you would be getting a pop up (a Windows one rather than avast) if anything Windows was blocking this installation.

Just can't get around the fact that avast has obviously flagged this one file, which I am sure is just a utility to check to see how much disk space is available for the installation of the game or something similar.

Maybe someone with a greater knowledge of Windows 7 will step in and be able to help...

    :)

Thanks for all the info so far. Kinda a weird problem huh?
i don't think it is a failing dvd drive as ALL other disks work. Just not disk 2-6 of BFME2...

As an update, it stopped working for more dvd's and Cd's as well (burned ones that i had pictures on)

I cannot eject the disks once they are in (if it is one of the chosen "Bad" disks)
I have to restart my laptop and eject them during startup.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Don't know how to check this, but I wonder if your battery could need replacing? I guess it would be nice to have another CD/DVD unit to put in there and see if it is the problem.

Might want to check to make sure the internal power connection to the CD/DVD is tightly secured as a side thought...

My laptop battery? It for sure needs replacing :[
but i don't know if that is related.
I tried checking all the connections too. no luck :C
