I also somehow got One-Plan. I'm not sure how I got it, but now it shows "Your PC is enrolled to get Extended Security Updates."

Is it OK to click "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available"? Will that cause my desktop to close and restart each time?
Or should I just restart my computer every day to make sure I'm up to date?
I'm not too good at this stuff so I need something simple. It's a rather old computer (5 yrs?) and I don't have a Microsoft account.

It should be fine to click the setting for updates. After the updates are installed the machine will tell you if a restart is necessary.

Thank you so much! I've been so nervous about everything; now I feel better.

If you have enrolled in ESU you will keep getting updates until October 2016 so any updates you can install as normal and restart the computer.

Thank you! I was worried if just saying I was enrolled meant that I hadn't gotten it yet. So I don't have to do anything further, right?

I certainly hope so, though it might be nice to go back to a more peaceful time!

Wrong. According to what I've read on the Microsoft website:

In order to keep getting whatever ESU provides you must log into your Microsoft account at least every two weeks. If you don't, you will stop getting the updates and you cannot restart the ESU program without paying $30 for it.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. There is so much misinformation, bad information, and plain old lies on the internet during the last 10 months.

Thank you for that info. I only have a Microsoft account on my special needs son's computer and I don't want it. (I don't remember why I got it, but it's not on my personal computer.) Is there any way to get rid of it? Or should I ask that elsewhere?

No - You definatly can get ESU for free. I've wiritten quite a bit on the topic, but this one is the cleanest.

Likely you had One drive backup enabled. If you already enrolled there is nothing you need to do. Just let the updates run as normal. You have free updates until 2026 -- officially. Microsoft has announced business suprt for 3 years (2028) and will liey extnd that support to personal pcs given the backlash.
