Something good happened to me while on vacation.

I'll try to be brief, thought I doubt I will succeed in that. While on vacation I had an extraordinary opportunity to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ with my father in law and brother in law. They have been traveling evangelists for well over 30 years and it was a good time to minister to other people. One thing though is that when serving God, He starts to show you things about yourself and something awesome happened.

Since becoming a Christian, and really even before that, I've always been what you might call and overly tolerant person, or overly permissive if you will. In other words, I would put up with a lot of people's crap and not say what I'm feeling, or I was afraid of confrontation. That's not to say I would never stand up for anything, but it would take someone trying me very hard for me to assert myself. Some would say that I was a pushover and they would be right. However, God started dealing with me on this issue.

Specifically that I am a parent of some 5 years now with two children and that I cannot afford to be a pushover any longer, because their safety and well being are at stake. Also, while I may be a nice guy, in the office, He showed me that no one respects me outside of what I can do for them as an IT guy, and this is evident in people blowing me off in not responding to my emails, not doing what is asked of them, but they sure love to jump and hurry me up when it's their projects on the line. In short, I've been afraid to confront someone, not in a mean way, but merely matter of fact way and because of that people don't respect me.

That has changed since I got back and already I'm seeing results. When I tell people "This is the way it should be done", or "You need to do this in order to do that" people are responding. They aren't blowing me off, and those that have in the past when they've come in now and asked questions that I have addressed in an email, or a training, I simply refer them back to their email or training materials. Stopping the hand holding because lets be honest, if you are a CPA in charge of millions in accounting, you should be professional enough to be able to respect someone enough to read emails especially when your computer is involved and that's how you make your money.

Anyway, for those who may not believe in God, the whole spiritual thing will not make sense to them. However, I hope my overall point was made. It's a nice change. Growing up more I guess.

I can't say I don't believe in God....a god anyway, I don't believe in religion but thats my personal preference. Whether your change has come from devine intervention or simply the human spirit inside you simply having had enough of idiots is niether here nor there, I think it's a good thing to be assertive to some degree. The difficult thing is not being assertive, it's judging how much assertivness to use in any situation. It seems to me you have shifted that personal balance to a more evn keel and I hope it continues to benefit your work and home life making everything easier and happier for you :)

I think the laymans term would be something like "You stepped upto the plate and it's paying off"
    Nice one mate :)

    Cheers for that!

Yeah even now, this girl at work whom I have told no less than SEVEN FRICKING TIMES what her username and password is to login, she emails me back today saying that she tried logging in with her previous password and it's not working. WELL NO KIDDING SHERLOCK! IT WAS CHANGED TO WHAT I TOLD YOU!

So here's how it's going to work:

    1. Ask her if she has time to work on this now? If yes, great, if no, I'll come back another time.

    2. After I get her all setup, I am going to ask her what part of my emails was she not understanding?

In short, I'm not letting this slide. Not because I want to score points, but to show her that my kindheartedness is not to be mistaken for weakness.

I pretty much could have written Ned's post.

For whatever reason you have seen this change, I'm happy for you.

My mom always had a saying which somewhat goes with the saying of 'treat others how you yourself would like to be treated'. It is 'people treat you the way you allow them to treat you'. I see this time and time again with people who complain about so and so doing something or other to them (including those in my family). I do not believe being nice and being a pushover go hand in hand.

    So good for you. :)

She totally admitted fault when I pressed her about it. No fussing or mussing about, cause she knew she was had. She even admitted to not following instructions.

Same thing happens to me,I fix my sister in laws brothers computer for free,it takes me ages but he never listens to anything I say because he's the computer guy for their family,he only brings it to me when he can't fix it.

So the past couple of years I've fixed 4-5 times a couple of different computers usually due to user fail, every time I fix it and tell him not to remove or change the software on it he doesn't listen and every time he removes the security measures I've installed installing an out of date Norton internet security which he believes must be better because it cost money even though its 2 years out of date and goes to the sites I've told him not to go to.

I've never asked for a penny or refused to fix it but push came to shove a few weeks ago,he formatted it himself without asking me first if I could fix it then got stuck and phoned me because he wanted to know where to find and how to install most of the drivers.

I just informed him that it took me 4-5 hours to install windows, update it,install all the drivers, software, security and get it humming.

And I'm not doing it again, this time.
