something's using up my hard drive

hi, something's using up my hard drive big time, and I'm not running anything that is supposed to use it like it does. Is there a way to figure out what is using it?

Does your Security do auto back ups ?? if so turn the auto back up off and delete all but the recent back up and see if that resolves your issue.

I tried all 3 free programs, none shows what process is working with the hard drive.

Also, it seems the disk usage is triggered when I insert a usb key, for about 5 minutes...

 

hmm it did it again without me inserting my usb. I think it did it by loading an mkv video this time.

Also, I figured out how to see what process is using the disk. It's in the task manager, in the view->select columns. It appears that explorer.exe is using the disk when it happens. Maybe a virus that uses my windows explorer to do something perhaps?

 

Sounds like you are on the right track.
In Task Manager -> View -> Select columns
check CPU Usage and I/O Writes and I/O Write Bytes

In Task Manager -> Processes tab, click either the CPU or I/O Writes column Heading twice to have the largest users appear at the top.

 

Indexing will eat up space. Also, run Process Explorer or diskview. The Sysinternals suite has quite a few good tools. Also Activesmart is another. http://majorgeeks.com/Active_SMART_d246.html

 

yes, I already did add the I/O writes and reads. That's how I figured out explorer.exe is using it up
