Sonic RecordNow burns dvd+r but not dvd-r

I've searched this forum and haven't found *exactly* my problem, so here goes. If all else fails I'll take The Big Guy (Maj. Att.)'s advice to someone else and try Nero.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 8600 and Win XP (SP2), which came with the no-frills version of Sonic RecordNow. I have burned stuff before to CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD+R, no prob. I burned a home video to a few Maxell DVD+Rs and then thought it would be nice to do it on some cheap Sony DVD-Rs I got. They keep getting rejected (I doggedly tried several different ones from the same batch), although if I insert the Maxell DVD+R it records just fine. It tells me to clean the disc or try another kind, but I keep thinking "It should use the bargain discs. Life's Not Fair!" (Ok, I know life's not fair.)

This is the "advanced" part of error msg:

Oh, I appreciate the link (even though it was almost in a foreign language and not a happy answer)!! It's nice to at least have a clue what's going on. That does confirm my fears ... so ... do I need to uninstall the Sonic if I download and use Nero (in hopes that it wil accept the cheapo dvd-r's)? I'm a little leery of that even though dh doesn't ever use it, he gets a bit uncomfortable with my downloading new stuff (esp as I usually don't know what I'm doing <G>).
