SONY DVD RW DRU-820A problem

i didnt have a dual layer burner so my friend gave me one, and we just replaced my old one with it. in my computer in shows up as "DVD-RAM Drive" but when i put a black dvd in it it changes to "CD Drive" instead of displaying "blank dvd" or "blank disc" or something, and if i double click it, windows explorer crashes. ive looked into it the best i can and the sony website says its all plug and play and requires no drivers so that cant be the problem, any help? please and thank you
