    Hello there!

I've got a problem with my Sony USB Media Player.

I just bought it and attached a Samsung external harddisk it. Now i attached it to my television and when i play a DIVX movie it freezes for a split second every 15 seconds or so. This happens basically with every movie i play.

Does anyone have any idea why that happens? I formatted the External Samsung Harddrive Fat32 as a primary partition. It's a 720GB drive.

    Thank you in advance!

    Kind regards,
    Niels

    Hi

Have you tried converting a DivX file to a MPEG format )or even AVI) and then trying again?

Formatting to Fat32 then your HDD is lacking its full space now, as 32GB is the max and Fat32 only handles 4GB files ok, I just winder if your drive is too large a capacity for the device, try a DivX file on a USB pen drive and see if it plays ok?

Is the External Samsung drive, self powered or USB powered?

David, the 32GB limit for Fat32 drives is a completely false one introduced by Microsoft with Windows XP; Win98/ME had no problems formatting above that limit, to at least 73-127GB, depending on other hardware restrictions common at that time. The actual limit for Fat32 drives is actually closer to 8TB! The maximum file size is still 4GB, regardless of the size of the FAT32 drive though.

There are several programs that will allow you to format above this limit, here's one.

Niels, have you tried playing a movie from this drive on a PC to see if the same thing happens? Could you copy the movie to a pen drive to see if it has the same problem on the Sony?

satrow, in answer to your reply: the problem doesn't appear while playing through my samsung externel harddisk attached to my laptop. The same movie copied to an USB stick and played attached to the device on my TV lookt fine aswell. So, it is a problem with my Samsung External HDD.

Again, it's a Samsung Externel HDD, Fat32 formatted with a capacity of 720GB. Please let me know your additional thoughts on this.

    Thanks in advance!

    Niels

    David,

The Samsung external HDD is USB powered, the Sony device only needs one USB port device to function properly. The HDD is 720GB so it exceeds the limit you pointed out. All of the DIVX files are under 4GB, and playing them through a USB pen drive doesn't give any problems. What do you suggest David? I presume a recent device like this is able to handle an external HDD this big, don't you think so?

    Kind regards,
    Niels

Umm, this makes me think the problem's NOT with the Samsung drive but with the way the Sony Media player is (mis)handling it.
