I have a Sony Vaio laptop, and recently it stated to freeze up. I have formatted the hard drive and replaced the ram. It took several attempts but finally got the vista and 7 upgrade to take. It still runs a short time and then just freezes. I then have to force it to reboot and sometimes even remove the power supply and battery. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Post the laptop model for future reference.

Did your have these problems before the windows 7 upgrade?

If yes then I would first rule out over heating.

First clean out all the vents with canned air, make sure all the fans are spinning.

First run this program and monitor your temperatures and post them.

Then run this program,it will stress your computer and hopefully lock it up,choose small ftp first which will stress your cpu,if it doesn't lock up choose blend test which will stress your ram and cpu.

If your computer is unstable the green colour of the workers will turn red and report an error.

If neither of these tests lock it up run this one, type 2000mb when it asks you 'if you have 2gig of ram,if you have more open two instances of memtest 'click the exe twice' simultaneously.

If you can sucessfully run all these tests and your temperatures aren't to high then you can rule out ram and cpu heat, the next test to run is a video card stress test so download the latest version of 3dmark you can run and run it.

While running prime and 3dmark listen for your fans start running faster which would be normal and post how high your temperatures go after 20 minutes or when they peak.

In addition to Rikky suggestion , do you have had a clean win 7 installation or do you upgrade from vista to win 7 ? :wave

My laptop is a Sony Vaio vgn-nw125j. I have replaced the ram and air cleaned out the computer. It still locks up. Occasionally I can get it to run for a short time, but if I move it in the least little bit, it freezes up. The mouse just stops where it is. I did notice if I jar it, it might start to respond for awhile. To get it to shut down, I have to unplug and remove the battery. I am thinking is might be the hard drive. Any thoughts?

Does it have diognostic partition to access?

Press F10 upon boot up to see if a diognostic partition is accessable. If not, I'd call Sony up to see how to access it. For what it's worth. The heat paste between the CPU and heat sink might of went bad.
