    Hello:

My SONY VAIO PCV RX650 will shut off on its own after using it for a while. When it reboots, it gives a message saying Hardware Monitor has found an error. Enter Power Setup Menu for details.

When I do I see that the Power Fan Speed is N/A.

I opened up the case to see what is happening and the power supply fan is not turning. I have cleaned it using compressed air and still nothing.

The CPU fan is running fine. This now happens every time I turn the computer on, and if it is left on for more than a few hours, or a majority of the day, it will shut off.

Is this an indication that I need a new power supply? Can anyone steer me in the right direction here as far as what to do, specifically for the machine I have. I have heard that the VAIO has specially built and structured PSU's to fit in the frame, since it is so close to the CPU.

I am not "fleet of foot" inside a computer, nor am I versed in what to do, so whatever help you can provide me, or suggestions, etc. I am appreciative.

The computer does still run, but I know I want to resolve this issue quickly, as it is a pain in the neck and can cause some damage internally.

OK, now the fan has come on.....but who knows for how long, etc.

I see you've had this problem before and the clean-up fixed it..
I wonder if the fan is a bit gunked up (inside where the compressed air can't get to). It sounds very much like it, based on what you're saying.
You can often pull the fan out and pull it apart with a bit of dexterity. If you can, clean out the insides and try it again.
Also, try spinning the fan with your finger, or a pen or something that you can get into it with. It should turn freely, although probably not very much - they often have resistance points around their turning circle which tend to slow them down.
You can try the above with the power on as well. If you see that the fan has stopped, try helping it to turn. If it starts up with a bit of a nudge, you can be pretty sure that the fan is the problem - either gunky, or burning out.
You may be able to replace just the fan - I don't know - worth asking, if it comes to that (unless someone else here knows).

I never mess with the power supply; if the fan only turns sometime, rather than risking a jolt, I get a new power supply. I'm too much of a coward to start disassembling a power supply for any reason!
My advice, get another power supply.

I have the same pc and a similar problem. The power fan speed is low, i think, because it shows in red. It gets blue again around 1950 RPM. I can't find anywhere that tells me how fast it should be going. I have taken off the cover to see if the fan is dirty....well, I can't identify a fan! I see nothing fan-like in the place on the diagram where it says it should be. I wonder if the diagram I am looking at is incorrect and it's behind (or under, the way I have it sitting on it's side) the power supply, which I am afraid to mess with.
