Sort By

How can I have my computer sort every folder alphabetically? Some do not do it automatically and it's a mess, and it's a pain to go through every folder.

 

Any folder can be sorted on any column by clicking the column heading. Each time you click the sort order is reversed, A- Z then Z -A

 

Yep, I'm asking how to sort folders within a folder, basically how to sort the entire C:\ drive.

 

XP, Vista, Win 7, something else?

 

I just tested this in Win 7, setting a folder to a chosen sort arrangement and then in Folder and Search Options > View clicking Apply to Folders. All folders on the drive were sorted in the same way.

Probably the same in XP and Vista.

 

I tried that (I'm on Vista) by right click and selecting a sort order than applying to all folders, not working. Are you sorting the folders some other way than by right clicking?

 

I sort by just clicking the column title, but it also works if I right click and use Sort by. I'll open a Vista VM and see what happens there.

 

It works the same in Vista but when sorting by name it will always sort sub-folders as one group and files as a separate group. AFAIK there isn't any way for it to treat files and subfolders as a single group to be sorted alphabetically. Is that maybe your problem?
