Is it possible for a sound card to go bad and produce sound in only 1 channel?

If not, can anyone help me get sound to the other channel? I have new speakers, but no sound on the left side.

    Any suggestions???

make sure your cound card is set to output in the speaker setup you have: control panel/sound and audio devices/ advanced (under speaker settings) and set it to 2 speakers (or whatever u have). I've found that sometimes my audigy 2 randomly resets to the default 2 speakers after i set it to 7.1, still unsure of why it does that  ok hope that helps.

Already changed that. Could the receiving port for the speakers have bad contacts where it connects to the PC? If so, do I need a new card???

if the speakers came with your computer or they are cheap-o bargain speakers, then the connections to the satelites themselves could be bad. Check for a signal; turn your volume way up and listen for static in the mute speaker(s). What sound card are you using?

Speakers are new JBL. They are doing the same as the original set.

It looks like the sound card is by Sound Max. I'm not quite sure how to tell which device is the actual sound card from the device manager.

soundmax is onboard sound. Are the speakers 5.1 or 2.1 or 2 or what? Have they worked before or is this a new problem? If your computer is used for gaming, i highly reccoment getting a separate soundcard, even if the one you use is working fine. It will increase your performance in games and just flat out will sound better.

The speakers are two sattellite and a sub. Not quite sure what they are considered. The is only one plug for the back of the PC if that helps.

I actually purchased the Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum card today, but as I took apart my case, I discovered that it was not made for my setup. I have a Sony Vaio, and that particular sound system has to be setup in a bay that I do not even have.

I did finally get the other channel to work by moving parts back an forth at the port and at the speakers. All seems to be well, although I'm sure that I could get better sound if I was able to install the Platinum card.

    Thanks for your help...

if you're gonna invest in a kick @$$ sound card like that then it deserves a comparable rig. I too have a Sony VAIO with an Audigy 2. Works wonders for my 7.1 setup. You can get an audigy 2 zs, very good card, which will work just fine in your system.
