I have searched this site in an effort to fix the problem on my own, but I can't. A lot of people have had the same problem, I followed the advice given them and still no sound. I am COMPLETELY computer illiterate. I think I removed whatever ever hardware or software(?) i had that makes sound. I have no sound device. Where to I get one? What info do I need to get what I need. this is a work computer, sent to me with no disk or manual. I don't even know what kind of computer I have. I'm babbling......:(

First of all, how do you understand that the sound device is missing? Are volume settings enabled in Volume and audio devices? If so, the device is disabled in BIOS or you haven't got a proper audio driver.

Download and install the latest realtek driver from the site www.realtek.com.tw/. It's the most famous audio chipset and it's likely installed in your computer.

If it won't help, check BIOS settings. Or you may do it first, before the driver installation.

About BIOS settings: to enter BIOS you need to restart your computer, push the 'delete' key on your keyboard while computer booting. I don't know your BIOS structure but you need to find the entry called 'Audio' there. Make it to be enabled. To quit BIOS press the F10 button, then select Y to save changes and quit.

I'm assuming you're using Windows XP.... click Start, go to Control Panel, double-click on System, click on the Hardware tab, click on Device Manger. Look thru the list for Sound, Video, and Game Controllers. Do you see any question marks or exclamation points? Do you see them under any other categories? If so, you have a driver problem. If you have no questions marks or exclamation points, close everything and go back to the control panel and look for and open Sounds and Audio Devices. Poke thru that and make sure that nothing is turned down, muted, etc; click on the Audio tab and your sound devices should be listed. If nothing is listed or stuff is 'greyed out', you again have a driver problem. Most PC's made in the last few years have built-in audio controllers; meaning it's part of the main system board. Anyway, follow the post above, and follow this post, and let us know what you find.

NOTE- you may need to click 'Classic View' in the Control Panel to view all the options I mentioned above. Classic View will be in the left hand column near the top. Also, for the above post, you may have to press 'F2' instead of 'Del' to enter BIOS. Power up the PC, and repeatedly press F1 or Del until the BIOS (also known as Setup) menu appears.

Thanks very much for responding! I know I don't have a device because when I go to the sound icon it says I don not have an audio device, I also get a message "no sound device installed" when I use something that needs it. I will try your suggestion now, and thanks again for responding!

OK, I went to BIOS, I think. Could not find audio, but did find plug and play. there was a no next to it and I changed to yes(?) As for the yellow !/?, there is one next to multi audio contoller. I dowloaded ...5663.... from the recommneded sight, and still nothing. I'd bet anything I did this wrong; is that possible?

OK- if you have a symbol in the device manager next to multimedia audio controller, it means that the driver is not installed. Before you try to install the Realtek driver from the above post, you should really find out what make and model your PC and/or motherboard is. Download and install and run Everest Home from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
Poke around in Everest and write down the motherboard make and model. Under Devices > Physical Devices it should list what your audio controller is; the make and hopefully the cipset number. Please run Everest and post the info so we can direct you to the correct driver. Installing the wrong driver can cause problems further down the line. If you don't have sound, chances are that Relatek is not your audio controller. So- run Everest and post the info I asked for, and direct you to the correct software and provide instructions on how to install the driver.

Perfect! That is exactly what I need! :) I checked out the Asus web site, and it doesn't show SiS audio; it shows SoundMax Audio. Wierd confused So, I'll provide a link to the Asus site, and a link to the SiS site.
    Asus: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
    SiS: http://www.sis.com/download/download_step1.php?id=155808
At the Asus site, you'll have to enter some stuff: Under 'Select Product' you'll choose 'motherboard'; under 'Series' you'll select 'Socket 478'; under 'Select Models' you'll choose P4S533-MX, click the green 'Search' button and you'll be directed to the drivers and other downloads for that motherboard. Look for audio and download the driver for Windows XP. Be sure you remember where you save the file; by default it goes to either your Desktop or My Documents. The SiS link should take you straight to the SiS7012 sound driver for WinXP. You'll have to choose a download location in the drop-down box next to Download Now, I'm assuming you're in the USA. Good Luck and keep us posted!

OMG, I have downloaded soooo much stuff, my computer is like the closet thats never used, but filled with a bunch of worthless stuff! Anyway, I followed all the directions and get really excited until a box comes up with a big X in a red circle that says -566870397; the top of the box saye, Update driver for plug and play. There were a bunch of other glitches since I really don't know what I'm doing, but I think I figured them all out but this one.
I was in system information and the multi media controller is identified as a problem driver. Now What?confused

Which driver is giving you the problem? If the multimedia audio controller is identified as the problem, then the driver is still not installed. Doing this type of tech support thru forums can be a bit tricky 'cuz I can't see exactly what you see and I'm not sure what you've done (or haven't done) but I'm doing the best I can ;)!!! Boot in safe mode by pressing F8 repeatedly upon turning on the PC and select Safe Mode from the menu. Go into the device manager and right click on the audio controller and select uninstall. Then go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and make sure no sound drivers are listed there; if one is listed, remove it. Reboot in normal mode. Windows should 'pick up' the sound device and ask for a driver. You'll have to make sure the driver you want to use is 'unzipped'. The first Window that comes up will ask if you want to search the internet for a driver, select no. The next Window, choose the second choice (specific location). The next window, choose Don't search. The next window, choose have disk. Then browse to the folder that contains the sound driver (you'll want the WDM driver if listed, if not, choose the Windows XP driver). After clicking next a few times it should install.

:celebrate THANK YOU, I have sound again; along with ALOT of uneccessary software/harware (?) downloads! Don't even want to venture a guess as to which I can delete. Next project will be to delete the soft porn sights my cleaning people visited during their less productive days! I am afraid when I get my computer upgraded from the office they will be able to see all that stuff right? Isn't it always there somewhere after its been downloaded or veiwed or whatever?:(

You can use something like CCleaner to clean any 'tracks' left by internet surfing. Anything else that people may have saved on purpose will have to be cleaned manually. Check in My Documents, My Pictures, and do a search for .jpg/.jpeg and .mpg/.mpeg files that may be 'inappropriate'.

Congrats on the sound! Glad I could help!

There's another little stand alone app called IE Cache Explorer. I'm not sure where I downloaded it from but it'll show every web site and cookie and basically a complete history of internet surfing activity and give you the option to delete this info.... just Google IE Cache Explorer and you should be able to find it. It may be here at Major Geeks, I don't remember....
