    I'm trying to install audio drivers for an old gateway e-series 2000 desktop. XP pro w/ SP3

    This machine was recently reformatted so I'm in the process of hunting down drivers.

    Everest Report says that the audio device is: AC'97 Audio Controller.

    I downloaded the drivers from Realtek's Website and also tried from Intel and they both give me the same system mesage to locate a file: ALCXWDM.sys "please insert CD"

    I've even tried installing the drivers from the add new hardware wizard and locating the drivers from the device list. same issue....

    Thanks tgell,

    this appears to be the propper driver; however during installation, I get this error message -- {attached image}

    I've restarted the computer twice and get the same message

    for the intel drivers I was un able to do a rollback nor do a system restore so i actually reformatted the machine again. I'll attach a dxdiag txt in my next post

    attached the DxDiag log file.

    I downloaded the new file you linked but was confused for there was no setup file present. just a "ac97ich4.sys" and "oem34.inf" files.

    was unsure of what to do from there.

    also attaching the hardware id info

    I would go to add new hardware and select sound card. Then when it asks you, say you have disk and point it to the inf file. I am not too confident that the zip file has only two files unless the rest are on the XP install disk.

    Your device is listed in the inf file. If you open it in notepad you can verify that.

    Have I ever said how much this site rocks?!

    The .inf file fixed the issue. Thanks for all the help
