i have an acer aspire 5100-3583 [laptop]

I know this seems a little weird, but the site owners prefers every one to start their own threads, as that keeps confusion out and also gives others a chance to see a prob and the solutions presented. That's why you were asked to start your own even though your PC is the same and the prob seems to be the same as that other thread.
I am not exactly sure which driver the other person in the thread choose but it did resolve their problem. Download the driver, uninstall your old one, (you do know how, it sounds like) then install the downloaded driver, completely shut down, not re-start your PC, then start it back up and post the results.
EDIT: Your driver may be corrupted.

thanks so much for the detailed help.

i tried the first suggestion: uninstalled Realtek High Definition and installed the suggested driver, shut down my computer, started it back up.....*no sound*.

so i uninstalled that driver, and downloaded-->installed the second driver [which was the same driver as the first, i went through the same wizard installation set-up]......[then shut down the comp etc etc]

    still no sound :(

    also:

when i tried the second suggestion/installation, my computer did not alert me to having found "new software" like it did with the first installation...not sure if that makes a difference...although the realtek audio driver IS listed in the device manager, so it does exist.

when troubleshooting, it talked about the "BIOS"...i guess the audio device on the "motherboard"....not sure if this has anything to do with the problem...?...
