Sound driver problems

So I had to re-install Windows XP Professional (service pack 3) on my machine. Tried playing music and Media Player says can't play file, problem with sound device.Under device manager, there are no yellow exclamation marks, and under Sound Video and Game Controllers the Legacy audio drivers are working properly (so it says). I even updated all drivers and no change. Tried downloading SP2, but there were issues with the download so I couldn't pull that one off

Hi

What where the issues noted with downloading and installing SP2? more likely it was something to do with you have a newer version installed as you have SP3, but knowing what you did and what the messages and why a step didnt work does help.

Best route is likely this below.

You will need to do this as this fools XP SP3 into thinking its SP2 and allow the re-install of the UAA HD Audio Patch as this patch is required before any of the HD device drivers are installed

Goto Start > Run and type in regedit , then click OK.
Click the plus signs in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, Current Control Set, Control, and finally, click Windows.
In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.
Right click it, choose Modify.
In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.
Click OK, close regedit and restart your PC. Windows will now think it is SP2 and allow you to install the Microsoft UAA Driver from HERE and then your Sound Driver from HERE

Make sure to reboot and then test your sound BEFORE, changing the value back to 300.

Then follow the same steps to change it back to SP3. Change the 200 back to 300.

Do also check in Services that the Windows Audio Service is Started and startup type is set to Automatic.
