sound drivers won't install properly

I just got thru doing an fdisk and reformat of my comp.I've been trying to get my sound working on comp. for 2 days now and i can't seem to get the right drivers for it. I have a compaq presario 7594 with windows 98.and i'm supposed to have ess allegro drivers but everytime i down load them they don'r work. They are looking for allegro.cat but i don't have that on my comp. and i can't find where to download that . Can anyone help. I don't know what else to do.

 

Yeah, I am having sot of the same problem. I just updated from XP Home to XP Pro and now my sound doesn't work. I have an HP and I just screwed my computer up... Well, I have been posting this into several forums and these forums have always looked good to me, so here is my story...

I just baught my computer a week ago or so. I have a 200gb hard drive, 2.2ghz AMD Athlon 3200+ precessor, 512mb RAM, and I was really happy with my computer. I of course ran services.msc, and msconfig and such. I reformat quite frequently actually. But, a friend of mine gave me a CD with windows xp pro + SP2 on it. I wanted Windows XP Pro really badly, because I onlt had home. Now, it works, but my sound doesn't and I want to restore to the default facory shipped settings. Normally, I would just backup my stuff, restart, and press F10 on a blue screen during start up. Now, something wierd happens... nothing. The blue screen comes up saying "F1 blah ... F8 blah ... F10 "system recovery" So, when I press F10, it doesn't go to the recovery. Now, I do not know how to get my factory shiped Windows XP Home back. PLEASE! help me. Is there anyway I can open 'Run' and then command, and then somehow access the system recovery from there?

Thanks for all responses... Please hurry. Also, I am very literate on computer, I know alot, this one seems to have stomped me... Please, I do not want to here 'did you try system restore' or anything like that. I know what I need, just tell me how to get system recovery to work again...

 

Thanks for the info. halo but i tried both those sotes and when i download the drivers I have to have Allegro.cat in my comp. which i don't. I tried to google Allegro.cat and couldn't find anything to help me so i'm still in the same place. Anybody?

I'm still having a problem installing drivers for audio. I've tried the sites you have suggested and when i go to install any of them I get a message saying, please insert your windows 98 cd but that doesn't help because my windows 98 doesn't have the files the install is looking for such as allegro.cat and others. I really don't know whats going on here. I've never had such a problem downloading audio drivers. Maybe it's because i did an fdisk and reformat of my system. Please someone help. i must have sound.

If you have downloaded the necessary driver files and it asks for your Win98 CD, do so. Its not that the driver files are on the CD, but there are files that the computer needs in order to change the drivers. This used to give me fits.

I know how you feel as I've been there and done that! There is no need to revert to XP Home unless you really want to. Go to HP's website, look for downloads for your computer model number. There should be an audio or multimedia driver listed for your computer. Download that, install it, and you should be ready to go. I ran into the same issue when I upgraded a friends HP from Home to Pro.
