I cannot get the same enjoyment from playing games in the Arcade here as no sounds come out of my speakers :cry
Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices - Properties = all devices working fine. I can hear the usual ding every time a program closes though.

    WinXP desktop Dell dimension 3000

    Any help is appreciated :)

Hey G, Post what your PC Maker and model # is.
    Look in your Device Manager:
Check to see if your Sound Device drivers are OK.
To open Device Manager: Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.
Then post an Everest Report for me.
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to.

I know you just had malware removed and that tends to mess with drivers, so I'm just taking a quick stab, but this may not fix you right away. We may have to go through a bunch if this doesn't work.
    First, check Windows Audio Service.
Is the Windows Audio service running?
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked

If that doesn't get your sound back, then do these installs.

I don't think you have HD sound, so this may be an easy install. Check in Add/Remove Programs. If Realtek is there, uninstall it. Your driver isn't exactly Realtek but your sound chip is.
Then run CCleaner, both Cleaner and Registry tools.
Install your chipset, shut down and then restart. Then install your audio driver.
    Your chipset:
    Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility
    Your audio driver:
Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio

Read the download and install instructions lower down on those pages.

I just thought of this. You should have a Dell Recovery and Driver Disc(s) You can also grab these drivers from there, but the ones I posted are possibly updated and will contain any fixes that the ones on your disc don't.
Also, make sure to check your sound after turning on the Windows Audio Service (if you need to turn it on), and check after installing your chipset drivers.

    Hi M
Please bear with me on this, as the printer drivers have gone too :( Reinstalled it but with problems - for later day!
I will have a look at the Sound problems later tonight :)

Glad it worked for you, G.
Not sure why the chipset driver didn't install, but looks like it wasn't needed. We may have to look in to that though, depending on your other driver problems.

I was worried all day about getting back here to find out what was going on.
I also got your PM about your other probs. Most likely more drivers corrupted by the malware removal. Don't fret yet.
Post what your printer model is or it may be in your Everest report but I'm whipped right now and will look first thing in the morning and grab a driver for you.

@ Emma, thanks for the cheering section.
