Anyone got any ideas for this? I have a simple SB live 5.1, an AMD AthalonXP 2600, 512 ddr, 160gb hd, and a jetway V266b. Whenever sound is played (through winamp or media player...with anything with any type of file (mp3, wav, mpg, even games sometimes)), the sound will play for 10 - 15 seconds and then it will just hang and repeat that one millisecond of sound over and over for a second or two. At first I could tolerate it but now it is REALLY PISSING ME OFF! I already tried swapping sound cards, didn't work. Tried swapping PCI ports, didn't work. Tried reducing acceleration for video and sound and it didn't work. I am lost with this  . PLEASE HELP!!!

What happens when you try to play a CD in the CD player?

If you have a DVD Player, can you play movies with sound?

it's music i've gotten from my own cd's, from the internet, EVERYWHERE! Videos from the internet, videos from dvd's, any media from anywhere. I don't ever play cd's on the computer so I dunno about that one.

Try placing the Sound Card into a different slot on the Mobo.

    Or is it built-in?

how many programs do you have running when this happens?

I had assumed this was Windows XP. However are you using Windows Me by chance?

alright...changing slots doesn't help, yes it's windows xp, and it doesn't matter how many programs i have running. I've tried running minimal programs and it still does it. this sucks!

Have you tried playing music from a CD in your CD-ROM? I think I asked this before and you said no.

What kind (brand) hard disk are you using?

i tried playing a cd with the cd-rom and it does it with that too. I'm using a Western Digital

I've found out that if I have something running in the background that constantly uses the proc (i.e. DVD2AVI or Smartripper), it doesn't hang. Anyone as confused as I am?

Did you ever find out a fix for this, because I'm experiencing the exact same thing.

I've found when I open winamp and have the visualizer running (doesn't have to be playing, but just running the visualizer), it doesn't do it anymore. It's weird.

Sounds like it might have been an IRQ conflict. Sound cards/subsystems don't play nicely with other peripherals that try to grab the same IRQ. PnP cards are supposed to be able to let Windows assign IRQs as needed -- but there's a reason that PnP is sometimes known as "Plug 'n Pray". Once in a while, Windows will assign the same IRQ to two different peripherals, and you have to tell Windows not to do that.

If I'm right, we'll need to know what operating system you're running to provide instructions on sorting it out.

And I wonder if the sound card has got a defect in the PnP logic somewhere that fouls up Windows' efforts to assign IRQs properly.
