sound issue

hi,

i just bought a toshiba satellite l300d. it came with vista preinstalled, and i've just put xp on a separate partition. i found most of the drivers needed pretty quickly off the toshiba website and almost everything is working now - except for the sound

in vista device manager, sound driver is realtek high def audio driver. in xp, it says legacy drivers

so i removed the legacy drivers and installed realtek high def. updating drivers in xp keeps telling me that there's 'no better match' than the legacy drivers. if i force the realtek drivers to install, they show up in devices under sound with that little yellow question mark. if i try to update the driver again xp automatically installs legacy drivers again. when the legacy drivers are installed, there's no issue, but when i go to sound properties everything is greyed out.

the sound works just fine in vista so i assume it's not a hardware problem.

my motherboard is AMD 780g (chipset/northbridge) & ATI SB700 (southbridge)

any suggestions?

Try this: uninstall any sound driver you may have installed (if possible) and restart the PC. Download KB888111 from this link. It's the UAA hi-def audio update from Microsoft. Install it. Then reboot the PC again and install this driver for the RealTek HD audio, and restart the PC again. Hopefully, that will work! If you're running SP3 for WinXP, you'll probably have some issues with KB888111; read this thread if you're running WinXP SP3....
