Sound Issues

I use MSN Live Messenger to chat. I have a friend that every so often when we connect his voice sounds like a bear. It is slow and too low to even tell what he is saying. MOst of the time it is ok but once in awhile it is distorted.

We have tried every setting we can to try and fix it. the only way we can get it back to normal is to reboot.

He has Soundmax Digital Audio ID PCI\VEN_1106dev_3059SUBSYS_80a11043REV_5 and OS isWin XP Pro. We both use headsets. I am not sure what other information would be pertinent.

He uses a lot of programs that require sound .... like skype, yahoo messenger, ATI Catalyst TV tuner, VOIP Stunt, Real Player and Windows Media Player for radio programs, YouTube, and other online sites that use sound.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

is it just their computer that's doing it? (do they restart, and not you, and it's fixed? )

could be just too much to handle on his computer, or he has too many things running, or it could be the net connection..is his headset usb? you may want to suggest he check for updated to his sound drivers....which he can find on his computer manufacturers support page, or if he needs help, tell him to post here, as we will need some more information.

 

Yes, it is just his computer. He is the only one that reboots. He has Cable internet and has never had trouble with the speed.
I know he runs a lot of things.. could it be just something like RAM?
We used remote desktop and when I checked he didnt have many things running... a lot less than me LOL
Headset is standard audio plugs. We will go check for updates for sound card. I guess I check the ASUS site... that is his MOBO.

yeah, if it's asus, you will need the model # of the motherboard
