Sound Issues?

    Hello fellow Geeks,

So I have this relatively old Toshiba laptop which has given me very little grief over the years. Most of time I'm able to tackle the problem(s) myself.

I'm currently having a sound-related-issue that has me stumped and 'tis why I seek your advice :)

So, every time I visit YouTube and view instructional videos, usually within the 1st minute or two the sound goes completely out. This also happens when I visit other sites such as the New York Post and try to view video content there, the sound kicks out. The only way to remedy the situation to get the sound back is to either reboot or put the computer to sleep, then sound comes back (which is getting to be a real pain in the you know what )

Things I've tried thus far thinking this would be an easy fix: 1st I ran Windows 10 "Sound Troubleshooter" and nothing was flagged. So I tried uninstalling the sound drivers, that too failed to fix the situation. I went to "Sound Properties" and disabled all "Sound Enhancements".......no luck.

I downloaded and installed Driver Booster which found drivers that needed updating including the sound drivers..... I thought this would put the issue to sleep.... After updating the drivers with Booster I'm still having the problem.

When the sound drops out there is NO yellow exclamation in the Device Manager with respect to the sound drivers?

I'm at a loss. Any information or suggestions to a possible fix is greatly appreciated ! Thanks so much for your time!

Would be useful for you to post a screenshot of the Device Manager with the Sound section expanded

I suspect Windows 10 updated your sound driver and that's causing the problem. MS doesn't always use the correct drivers.
    1. Go to the Toshiba site and download the sound driver for your model laptop.
(Some manufacturers allow you to create a driver disk when the computer is new. If you've done that, the proper driver might be on it).
    2. Turn off driver updates in Windows 10.
    3. Stop using programs that update a bunch of drivers to "magically" fix the computer.

I rarely find it necessary to update any drivers from the time I purchase a computer unless I have a problem. Then my first stop is at the manufacturer's page to see if they posted an issue and updated a driver.

Hey there Ploder. So I tried your recommendation with regards to installing the OEM Toshiba driver(s) I thought this was an excellent idea that didn't dawn on me. Unfortunately that solution didn't work :(. One NEW strange thing i found out in the last day or so... when my sound goes out i found a different way to get it to come back without having to reboot or put the computer to sleep. NOW all i have to do is refresh the browser for the sound to come back. Very strange.

I thought perhaps it was browser related and decided to test that theory in other browsers. I played the same YouTube video in Chrome, Fire Fox, Internet Explorer and MS Edge.....all with the same result, the sound driver still takes a dump regardless of the browser i use and an F5 refresh will bring the sound back for something like a minute of playtime before it dumps again. This doesn't happen if i play a DVD movie. The sound remains stable.

The only reason i used the driver update program mentioned in the earlier post is because when i was searching for a solution to my problem i came across this link from Major Geeks that suggested that i use that program as a possible solution.

Anyway, any other suggestions to help me resolve this most annoying problem is greatly appreciated. Suggestions anyone>? Thx

Since I only use one of the 4 browsers you've tried, Chrome, Fire Fox, Internet Explorer and MS Edge and that would be FF, I've shown what my plugins look like.

See if you have those three and they are set to Always Activate.

My version of FF is ESR which is at v 60.5 and you are probably using v 65.

can it be a bad or corrupt codec ?
since your disc play alright, and when you uninstall/reinstall the drivers can it be reinstalling the same corrupted codec if that's the issue?
that is only a guess on my part.

Post a link to one instructional video so I can see what happens when I fire up FF ESR.
(My day to day browser is Palemoon because it loads so much faster than FF).

    Hey there ploder,

So just now while watching an instructional video on YouTube about micro electronics repair my sound took a dump at video timestamp 10:32. I was using FF

Here is another weird behavior i was able replicate over and over.... after each dump the only way to get the sound back ON without rebooting was to EXIT my FULL SCREEN MODE and then PAUSE the video, then when i hit PLAY again the sound came back on for less than 2 minutes... and i had to keep repeating this process to get through the video...some strange shit man i must tell you. You ever hear of such stupid stuff?

after the first dump @ timestamp 10:32 about every 2 minutes it would dump repeatedly again.

What happens if you choose NOT to go full screen?
    I rarely use full screen.

I didn't want to watch the full 29:10 video but it did not stop at 10:32.

Explain exactly what you mean by this
    No sound but still video?

Yes, sound still goes out completely if I'm not using full screen. Sorry for the slang "dump" refers to the sound going completely out.

So for total clarity the sound drop outs only occur when you are streaming from the internet and do not occur when you pay a sound file / or game on your pc.

I note that in DM you have 2 entries under Sound. Have you tried disabling one or the other to see whether that may help. I would go for the 'High Definition Audio Device' first personally.

I had more time so I watched more of the video; no sound cut out for me.
What happens if you download the video? I know its a pain but if you don't want to deal with the sound cutting out every 2 minutes, it is a good workaround. I have the addon Easy YouTube Video downloader installed.
    Code:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-download/
    I downloaded as mp4 in 360p (I wanted a small download).

I'll search for "sound cuts out on YouTube" to see if I can come up with some things to try.

I found this "Sometimes the other multimedia programs open on your device may cause this error on YouTube."
So when the sound cuts out, open Task Manager (ctrl + alt + del) and see if there are any programs running that have to do with multimedia. End the task if you notice anything.
See if the sound works and if it stops again, repeat the Task Manager.

If you notice one program seems to be interfering, post it and I'll see if there are settings that can be adjusted.

I found something else which might take care of another program interfering with your browser's sound.
Open Control Panel, Sound and click on Speakers. Then click on Properties and the Advanced tab. (I don't have a sound card so you might have better selections than I do).

Check in Advanced that the boxes are checked/ticked under Exclusive Mode.
