I had sound and the next no sound. In the sound control everything is greyed out and 'Device Manager' states I have no sound device. But I just had sound. I have no external sound card. What is the nickel-sized battery on the motherboard for? I was thinking... Please help. Thank you. This is my first post and I put it in the wrong place.:cry

Did you try control panel > Sounds and audio devices?
You could also try add new hardware, see if your sound device is in the list and if it is try re installing it. If that doesn't work then do some research on your computer and find out what the model of your sound device is and try to locate a driver download for it, once you find and download the drivers install them and see if that fixes the problem.

You can also try going to control panel > Administrative Tools > Services, Look in there and find "Windows audio" Make sure it's started and enabled.

I did go to control panel (Sounds and Audio Devices Properties) and it says, "No Audio Device". My PC was built by some guy and he said it runs a dual OS-Visa & XP. There was a program (I forgot now what it was) to do maintenance and I've never used it so I started it. After that there was no sound. My PC doesn't have a restore point or even boots up to choose a user and so I couldn't go to a previous point on the PC. I've tried downloading audio drivers but don't know which ones or how it works. What's that battery for on the motherboard? I miss my sound. Thank you in advance.

I just went to Administrative Tools > Services,-"Windows audio". It was started but I clicked 'restart' - just hoping. Nope. It didn't work. I also started everything that wasn't just to see if it was somewhere in the Services.

    That's your bios battery...
Try this.. Go to Start> control panel > Administrative Tools > Services, Look in there and find "Windows audio" Make sure it's started and enabled. Let me know if it is enabled or not or if it's even in there.

Oh, is it okay to take out the battery to find out what it is I need to replace without it doing any harm to something else? Thank you so much and please forgive me if I do post it wrong or something 'cuz I'm just learning.

I don't think you should take out the battery.

If you post what computer you have or motherboard someone here can fid the driver you need.

Did the guy that built it leave any cd's for it?

I don't remember if he gave me anything to go with it but I don't think so. I don't know how to find the name of the motherboard but it is a Intel Celeron computer. I did a BeLarc scan and it shows for the board as SiS-650GX. Does that help?

Everest is not free so I don't want to be paying out money to have it not work for me. I guess the only thing I can do is to take my computer in to a shop. I just have very bad luck with places and once I almost didn't get my computer back.:( Thank you all for trying to help.

How do I check my BIOS? This is probably where the problem may lie since I have no audio options in my control panel. I am so desperate!

Thank you Gloozit. I did download Everest and scanned the hardware and hopefully the report is attached. Please let me know if anything in there can answer my audio problem.

After trying to install it stated, "Due to the fact that your computer is not equipped withour audio chip, you can not avail yourself of these advanced features." I downloaded the Audio Driver zip file and it went to a temp folder and then I clicked on the .exe file, right?

How do I know if I can use an add-on audio card? You're probably right about the chip dying out on me.

Audio is set to Enabled - this would be found in the Services, right? It is started.

Okay, I checked the BIOS and it is enabled. I will go ahead and get a sound card next week. Thank you so much for taking the time to help me. I'm sure this is the problem with the chip dying and all. I'll have no problem installing it. I've even learned some new things because of all of this so it wasn't a total loss and I'm always glad to learn something new. I'll let you know how it goes and when I get my audio working. Thanks again!:wave

I found the answer to my problem. I went back and checked the sound settings in the BIOS. Somehow the sound got turned off and so it said I didn't have any drivers. I didn't buy another sound card yet so everything turned out great.
