sound/no sound

am running windows xo with sp3. P5Q deluxe motherboard with on board SOUNDMAX.
Sound completely went out. after reinstalling I now get sound from files stored on computer. But no sound from youtube, etc. Also no sound from internal speaker.hear no windows start up/ shutdown sounds and cannot get sound icon in taskbar.
had error msg "HDA audio bus driver missing". But was able to correct this.
Anyone have any ideas, suggestions?

 

When you go into Device manager does it correctly display your sound card? Also when you mean files stored on the computer do you mean media files played in a media player?

 

device nabager shows no sound card. I assumed it was on board enabled. Right?
Yes, mean media files stored on disk. Can play those but not from an email or internet

 

still having problems with sound. Have P5Q motherboard with sound chip on board. Reinstalled all drivers. resuly is as follows:
no sound from internal speaker - says no driver instaled - couldn;t find driver
some internet sounds not working - i.e. youtube, forwarded email links to sites
can play media files stored on disk.
Help! very frustrated :-o

 

Are you sure you have downloaded and installed the correct drivers from ASUS?

Who manufactured the computer, and what is it's model number, if it is not a custom build?

 

used the ASUS motherboard cd to reinstall the drivers.
am running XP with SP3.
Strange that only some sounds are gone and others play ok.
The system speaker shows up in device manager but O cannot get drivers to update or rollback.
