Sound played going into/out of hibernation

Lately, when i go into or out of hibernation, Windows XP (fully patched) plays a sound--specifically, the chimes file. If I delete the wav file, Windows just plays another sound. This is something I can obviously live with--but there's no place in the sounds control panel function that specifically deals with these events. I'd like them to be silent, like they used to be. Any thoughts?

This is a long shot, but you might try selecting a different Sound Scheme, reboot,
then go back and select your original scheme and see if that reinstates your original settings.

I'd also look at whether or not you have installed any new software or updated a driver.

 

Well it was worth a shot, but changing the sound scheme didn't help. No new software or drivers either, but I did have a, erm, small problem when I tried to run ComboFix (another story). Got that mess all cleaned up and I suspect that's what caused the sound change to begin with.

 

I also had a sound problem, No Sound in my browsers, about a year ago after running ComboFix and MGTools, but I don't know which one caused the problem.

I tried a number of things to fix that, including a registry fix that was supposedly a Sure fix,
but ultimately had to use an earlier Restore Point to get the sound working again.
Fortunately there was no malware involved.

 

Hah, now that you mention it I had *also* run MGTools just for grins...looks like the grin is on the other foot, as it were. However, earlier restore points (would have been from early last month) are now no longer available.
