Don't know if this is software or hardware problem. WMP 9.0 just quit. listening to a CD, went to change and then got the attached dialogue boxes. Device manager states that everything is working well. Any ideas? FYI, this is a Compaq computer (I use the term computer very loosely and with some license) and it has "onboard" sound rathet than a card. I hope this thing is not getting ready to cook.................. TIA Tate

    Hey, Bocce,

What happens if you open the Control Panel's Sounds applet, click the sounds tab, and set a sound to play for "Start Windows" and then reboot ??

If you get no sound OR one of those pop-ups, I'd guess that your on-board sound has jumped ship. Usually, though, the use of an inexpensive sound card in one of your slots will fix that up (and be just as good as the on-board sound was).

I do not know!! I'm presently at work. I did not think to see if I got any welcome sound. I've been thinking about putting a card in anyway. Seeing as how Compaq is so darned proprietary, it will accept a card, won't it? I just hate hardware sometimes. Also, if the sound went south, is this indicative of potential frying of the mobo or something?

Who knows? My guess is that the part can fail without the whole being compromised. But that's a guess again.

I'm guessing a lot around here lately.

Thank you for your best guess!! I'll open it up tonight and see if I can visually see anything. Wish I could keep the mouse and replace everything else. I've almost got enough money put back to get a custom box built. Hopefully in the next two months. Thanks again, Tate

So, I came home from work and fired the box up. Sang a song to me at the welcome screen. Put a CD in and it fired right up and played. Watched a video with sound just fine. it's like it fixed itself. Before I posted earlier today, I shut the box entirely down and rebooted twice and got the dailague boxes attached. Any ideas as to what may have happened? Can a sound card work one minute and not the next? could it be that WMP is going south. I'm confused.

Well Wiz, since your "best guess" is worth 10 of my "enlightened inspirations" anytime, I'll take your word for it ;)

Hey Bocce, try this thread. Some interesting things about WinAmp there.

Would I be well advised to go to WinAmp? WMP is what I generally use...when it works!!;)

Hey Bocce :) I've used both. Both work well (when they're working ;) ) If WMP is working again and you can file the glitch under Non Repeating Event, then sure stick with it if you like it. But if it happens again, then WinAmp is a really good player also. Some say better than WMP (The latest version of WMP that is.) WMP does have that annoying habit of wanting to "phone home" every time you light it up, but that's get-aroundable. <shrug> it's your call.

Thanks Bill! ZA keeps WMP off the phone so thats all good. I think I'll D/L WinAmp and see what flies. Thanks for your response!:)
