Sound Problem help please

Hi, can someone please help with this problem, i had my friends pc over the weekend to fix as she had a virus, but now there is no sound at all, in the device manager under sound, audio, soundmax intergraed audio digital has gone,
I got her to download soundmax intergrated digital audio driver v 5.12.0.1, but when she goes to install it, it says that the driver can not be found, i read on the website that she has to already have installed a system chipset. downloaded from hp website, can not find the chipset there, i am getting really confused on what to do, she really wants her sound back, i dont no what has happened. any ideas. thanks in advance

Are you getting her to check the option that says "Have disk" and getting her to point the driver installer at the location where the driver file(s) is/are? And presumably the driver isn't in a zipped file and needs unzipping first?

It's amazing how often we overlook the obvious (yes, I'm guilty!! ) so these are my suggestions to start with.
