Sound Problem

I had a strange thing occur with a Dell operating XP Pro. I had the sound on, then muted it. When I reversed the mute, I couldn't get any sound. I checked the usual methods and the troubleshooter says everything is working normally. The little icon on the task bar indicates the sound is on. I tried restarting, muting, and turning everything back on. Went under the control panel and the administrative options. The computer and the windows OS says everything is working normally. This is really bizarre.:confused

 

Try this;

(excuse me if steps are bit different on XP, it's been a while since i used XP)

*Go to control panel
*Sounds
*Playback devices
*then select your device, right click it, and click "test"

Do you hear anything?

Yes I have tried that, and I can get sound by testing the hardware. However, when I am online, or using a program, or inserted a DVD there is no sound. :confused

It is very odd.

Click the sound icon on task bar and check the volume is a decent lebel, then try this;

Go back to sound, then playback devices, then right click and go configure, then go through the wizard checking everything is good, it's sometimes worth going through it a few times trying different settings seeing if that works.

It turns out that there is some sort of problem with the computer itself. The sound was working then went away.
