Few ideas double check you have the right drivers,go through all your sound options, make sure the speakers are plugged into the right socket, make sure the speakers work, test some headphones, reinstall the drivers, remove completely in device manager restart and install the drivers you have downloaded when windows asks for them, run dxdiag, find the cd that came with your mobo it will have the drivers on.

    :) i like those words.

yeah. even with the worst speakers/headphones, you shoudl be able to hear a positive difference between a dedicated soundcard and onboard sound. i recommend you go for the chaintech av710: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=29-120-103&depa=0
newegg's been having that thing backordered for a whole month now; makes me wonder why they haven't ordered any... anyway. if you're patient, go with newegg. otherwise, any sound card based on a via envy would be really cool.

but first, try finding out the sound chip model and go to their website (usually realtek) and download the proper drivers there. from past experience, the asus website's been a little shady on support downloads.
