Hmmm... sounds like you need a home cinema decoder! And also an external USB soundcard that supports 5.1 surround, unless your laptop has surround sound out. Its tricky because you're mixing stereo out (from the stereo/TV) and surround out (laptop, DVDs...). I'm no home theater expert, but I imagine thats tricky.

Well, what you're suggesting could be acomplished with a HTPC, but thats probably further than you'd like to go (and probably a lot more expensive!).

If you're not bothered too much about surround, you could just plug the laptop and TV into your current stereo, and use that.

Ok, well lets get this straight. You've currently got a stereo, with an amp and speakers?

If so, plug your laptop into that, and there you have sound from your lappy on big speakers.

When you say "TV", I assume you have a DVD player? If that supports surround, then you can use a digital out into a 5.1 decoder/amp with some surround speakers. You can buy these from pretty much any upmarket AV shop, but they're not that cheap!

Is that the sort of setup you'd be happy with?
