Sound Troubles

Hi.

Since I received excellent help with a previous problem here, I thought someone here might be able to help me sort a new one out.

Recently the audio on my laptop has been playing up. The sound is crackly and it warbles quite frequently, sounding like an old record player. This is really frustrating for me as I use my computer as my main music player, and also to watch movies.

It is not a problem with my speakers, as it is the same with any speakers that I plug in, and it is the same with my laptops own speakers. It is also not a problem with specific software (e.g. windows media player), as it is the same with all programs with all files.

Also, recently when I turn my computer on there is no sound at all, and on my device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark against my Vinyl AC’97 codec combo driver, and it will not work unless I disable and the re-enable it.

I hope very much that someone can help me with my problem!

Ohhh yeah, sounds like an audio driver issue.

Fastest, easiest fix to try is reinstalling drivers. Here's how:

1. Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'
2. On the 'Computer Management' window, click 'Device Manager'
3. Expand 'Sound, Video and game controllers'
4. For every item you can, right-click and select 'Uninstall'
5. Reboot the computer

The above procedure will uninstall your live audio drivers. When windows reboots, it will detect the sound card as new hardware, and will install drivers from cache.

If that doesn't help, we may have to update the drivers outright. We will need to know the make and model of the computer, if not the sound card itself to help further.

 

The exclamation mark ! means an install was tried and failed with problems. I'm not familiar with that combo driver but see if this helps you.

Thanks, I uninstalled then reinstalled the driver, and that seems to have worked, however i thought i'd fixed the problem a while before but it turned out I hadn't, so I shall give it a while before I am 100% sure the problem has gone away.

Ok, so i think the problem has been solved, but i am still experiencing a problem that might be related.

After having an urge to record some music i had written on my computer, i decided to use a program that ive had for a while, Audacity.
I plugged my guitar into my laptop (something that has usually worked in the past) and pressed record. Upon playback, there was a horrible distorted high pitched tone. I also found that this was present when using sound recorder as well.
I think it has something to do with WAVE, as when i pressed mute on the volume control the sound went away, but of course, i can only record using WAVE (i think), so this is quite a frustrating problem.

I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone can give me!

Hi again,

So it turns out that the crackling and warbling has come back, which is rather annoying.
I have also tried the link that musksnipe posted, but the file won't download from the website, it says that the operation aborted.

You could try this link. It scans for errors related to your driver and has updates for that driver.
