I received last week a used pc: AMD aThlon 64 3500+ chipset nVidia nForce4 SLI 2Gig memory PC3200 DDR Ram video Nvidia GeForce 6600 (250Mb) mobo Asus A8N-SLIDeluxe os Windows XP Media CenterMCE 2004
The problem: when the pc starts I got sound for aprox; 20 seconds then no more sound,
I disabled the onboard sound and put a soundcard in, the system sees the card but no sound, after reboot 20 sec sound again
could this be a driver problem or have I to reinstall XP again

Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.
Check: Device Manager for bad drivers.
For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

It almost sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere. Check your speaker wires and connections for frays, loose fit, or severely kinked wires. Try jiggling your wires or gently tugging at the connection to PC and speaker, while your sound is out

Try installing your chipset driver, then your audio.
    Your chipset driver:

And this should be your sound card driver.

    hallo
    sorry i am late
but i did a clean install with a fresh copy of xp pro. Reloaded all the drivers and yes i have the same problem.
I did check the connections inside and outside the pc.
The most strange effect is when the pc starts up I have the windows melody but after a while no more sound effects are possible. When I start up and play a music sample (from within my music) it starts ok for 20 to 30 seconds and then finish with the sound.
I am out of ideas for now. I think something must be wrong with the mobo.
Because when I enable the onboard sound via the bios I have no sound at all even when the pc starts up.
Anyway I apreciate so much your help and will eventually look for another machine.
    Good evening (from Belgium)
    Raymond

The only thing I can think of is that as the motherboard and chips heat up, something is losing connection.
You said you did a fresh install of your OS, so that should eliminate malware, UNLESS your music files are infected and you reinstalled the infection when you reloaded them.
    Have you checked for malware?
