    Hello
Dell 5150, Laptop, xp home, sp3.
When boot up pc makes a 'ding' sound.
I went to control panel> sounds and chose 'no sounds' >apply and ok.
It still makes a noise every boot which I do not want -is there something I am overlooking?
    Thank you

    Hello Peterr,

The ding sound your referring to. Is it when your computer is first starting up before it bring up Windows Xp, or is it the ding sound after the Windows XP screen comes up and before your desktop?

    Thanks,

    Hello
After I boot up, I sign in and click enter. My desktop appears and the icons are assemblinging in the lower right hand corner of my lap top.
I see 'connectivity' before the 'ding' so it is not that. After about seven seconds or so, there is no change to the screen, but that ding sound occurs.
I went to sound and again chose "no sound" >apply, as oposed to "windows default".
I'm not sure but it seems to be after the xp screen has come up.
Because nothing changes visibly it is difficult for me to tell.
Look forward to hearing from you and thank you.

    Hi Peter

Do you have any USB devices plugged in that leave the USB removal icon in the system tray? if so it could be the USB activation ding for these types of devices. Try in Sounds to set Device Connect to None, and/or Device Failed to Connect to None

    Good Idea Halo,

And it does seem that possibly its USB being recognized from there. Other thing that possibly it is, may be a software, or program on startup that makes that noise. Try the USB fix by Halo first, and if not, we'll go from there.

    What a coincidence!
I was surfing and all of a sudden that 'ding' sounded off.
Under sounds all I have is what I told you and beneath 'no sound' or 'windows default' there is 'delete' and 'save as is'.
With what I see under sound I could not do as you suggested.
In the system tray I see icons: 1-battery meter with ample time,2-Netgear card saying I am connected,3-Netgear icon saying my signal strength is good,4-Mcafee icon,5-volume, 6- local area connection is unplugged.
    xp home, sp3,
    Thank you
P.S. could it be it dings when I get email via my isp? I have never experienced that so it is a stretch.

Typically no. But what I may suggest is that it may be your MSN that may be making that ding.

Also, what I may suggest is your items on startup, possibly something is making noise as it starts. Do you have any items that are attached to your PC, minus Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor/audio? if so, try disconnecting them one at a time, and see if the ding goes away.

I have nothing but the Netgear Card plugged into the laptop.
I think the mystery of it all is more annoying than the sound at this point.
For as long as I can remember, that ding came on when the desktop was appearing but never while I was just sitting here.
Btw, you wrote me and there was no email notification so I am back to square one.
I thought there may have been an obvious fix as I amnot a tech and it seemed as though i was just overlooking something.
    Shall I concede?
