Soundcard Problems?

First of all let me say that I am not sure that the soundcard is the problem. I helped a friend yesterday reformat his hard drive and reinstall xp. The only problem that we came across is that there is no sound now. He has a lcd monitor with the speakers built in. It was an hp computer. I took a look in device manager to try and find his soundcard but all I saw was something like legacy audio drivers. Is this his soundcard? If not how can I find out what soundcard he has? I also tried to go through control panel to adjust volume ect. but it seems as though it does not recgnize any speakers as being connected. Should we run a new driver for his monitor? I am lost. Help!!

 

If you know the model you can go to HP and get the right driver, or post the model and i will find it. ed

 

Installing drivers for his monitor would be a hopeless thing to do if you you have no sound and if you don't have hp's web address http://www.hp.com/
And chances are his onboard sound card is realtek (at leat that's what on my hp machine).

It says it's an update, but that only means it's an updated full driver. Just download, and follow the directions. Easy. HP offers an 'Install Now' option, and a 'Download Only' option. I always download the file, and install after the download is finished, that way I always have the install file and I can burn it to CD for future use.
