It looks to me that this is the one for integrated sound.

Once you run the R94481.exe file check in C:\dell\drivers for the R94481 folder.

Then go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager and find the yellow question mark for sound/audio and right-click and select Update Driver. You want to go through the next screens telling it that you have the disk and/or browse to the C:\dell\drivers\R94481\SMA_WDM\W2k_XP folder and it should accept that location and try to install the driver. If successful, reboot and check foe sound.

See if that works or if iain.t can give you the specific steps to browse to that folder in XP.

    Hey sach,
The board does have an integrated audio card, but Dell (being a pain in the a**e) like to add their own little mix in which requires either a soundblaster or soundmax driver/software before the board will recognise it's own audio card, they can never just have things that simple, that's why they make mountains of cash :-D, most people would just contact Dell to resolve an issue, costing them a small fortune in cash for a simple fix, I think they ask for upwards of £$60.00 s for this type of fix then the premium toll charge for calling them.

    Hi Iain,

I'm not very good at drivers; I'm just going from plodr's link to the back of the PC which only gives one option for integrated audio. I'm hoping the setup.exe might be the problem and if murdammi manually points device manager to the folder with the .inf(s) it will find the driver. I figure it is worth a quick try.

    Hi sach,

Yes you are correct in your line of thinking, but like I said Dell like to throw their little mix in, the OP has been on the phone to Dell and got the drivers for his machine and they will not work , and will never work, unless you install the soundmax/soundblaster drivers/software which the Dell advisor has *forgot* to inform him, hence more phone calls more money for Dell :cry !! The OP has also stated that the soundmax/soundblaster folder has been deleted from the machine. This is why I have asked for the OP to give me the service tag# for the machine as this will give me the exact version of drivers/software to get his audio working again.

    I hope tgell's link works.

Do give your service tag # and double check the model number printed on the circle around the power button. (The reason I say that is I can't seem to get a link that has the 4600 and the de051 motherboard. The dimension 1100 and de051 motherboard seem to be linked.)

I'm just going to post this link here since it may be difficult to find later should you still have problems. This thread seems to have had similar problems to yours, especially getting the Realtek readout when it was really Intel audio.

The Dell driver that worked was the same 198x driver but a different version 7mb download versus the 4.5mb download I posted earlier. It may do no good but I thought I would post it while I had it handy. It would fit into Iain's idea that Dell adds things to the basic Intel driver install since in the thread getting the driver directly from Intel did not work.

I made a major mistake on that driver. I thought it was for XP but it is actually a Vista driver, so I would not download or install. Sorry. That first link I deleted was actually for XP but it was a HP driver.

I still would like to check via the service tag#.
