I have a memorex DVD player and a CD R-RW R+. When I try to play a pre-recorded CD, I get static and skips. This is recent.

I have an Intel chip (P4), 2 gb of memory, Creative Labs sound card and NVidia graphics.

Help! Is there a cleaner to clean the players, or is it a driver or?

Thanx in advance for any helpful ideas.

pre-recorded as in bought from the music shop or one that someone has burned?

If its someone that burned it, I've seen times where (Assuming at this point its an Memorex DVD player that goes into a TV) it does not work properly because of either burn speeds, or even disk types. I've seen this even happen in car stereos, where it wouldn't like burned/copied disks if they are at a wrong speed, or wrong media.

also, it can depend on the ripping method used to extract the audio.

If the drive or ripping software doesn't have error correction then any read errors will get burned directly to the copied disc, resulting in skips, pops and other noise

I recommend Exact Audio Copy for the best quality, which will work with or without hardware error correction.

Elder_Usr is also right in the fact that not all drives like all media. Cheap recordable CD's can give grief in a lot of standalone players such as your Memorex

Music CD was purchased from store, so cheap recording process is out. Elder_Usr may be onto something. Thank you one and all.

Its a bit of a strange one then, you could try cleaning the drives to try and rule that out?

You can buy cheap drive cleaning discs from most home electronics stores, your local music shop would even have them.

The other things to look at, does it happen with any purchased disc or just the one?
If just the one does it play OK in someone elses player?
or, is it dirty or scratched in any way? Most DVD rental shops will have a disc re-surfacing machine.

Otherwise, if it still skips in someone elses machine, isn't damaged and has been like that since you bought it, then the disc itself could be faulty? You could take it in to where you bought it for an exchange.

Just throwing some ideas out there for you to try...
